Your Guide to WIC Services

The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program offers vital support to pregnant women, new moms, infants, and children up to age five. Funded by the USDA, WIC focuses on improving the health and nutrition of families who may need assistance. This guide will help you understand how WIC can benefit your family.

What is WIC?

WIC is a special supplemental nutrition program funded by the USDA. It offers:

  • Individualized nutrition support for moms, babies, and children
  • Breastfeeding help and education
  • Health screenings to ensure your family’s well-being
  • Tailored food packages to meet nutritional needs during key growth periods

Who Can Benefit from WIC?

WIC serves:

  • Pregnant women
  • New moms (up to six months postpartum or breastfeeding up to one year)
  • Infants and children up to the age of five

Eligibility is based on income, with guidelines set at 185% of the federal poverty level. If you or your family receive SNAP, Medicaid, or TANF, you are automatically eligible. To get started, reach out to one of our offices for assistance with the application process.

WIC Food Packages

WIC provides tailored food packages to help meet nutritional needs. These packages may include:

  • Legumes: Canned beans, dried beans, or peanut butter
  • Dairy: Milk, cheese, and yogurt
  • Whole grains and produce: Fresh, frozen, or canned fruits and vegetables
  • Cereal: Children 6 months and older receive infant cereal, while women and children receive adult cereal.
  • Breastfeeding support: Enhanced food packages for breastfeeding mothers and infants

Breastfeeding Support

WIC offers additional help for breastfeeding mothers, including:

  • Peer counselors: These are WIC staff with personal breastfeeding experience who can provide advice and support.
  • Tailored breastfeeding packages: Moms who breastfeed exclusively will receive additional food support.

WIC provides personalized support through:

1. Nutritional screenings: WIC uses VENA (Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessment) to identify your family’s specific health or nutrition concerns.

2. Counseling and education: Based on your needs, WIC provides guidance on issues like picky eating, low weight gain during pregnancy, or managing food allergies.

3. Personalized advice: WIC staff will work with you to ensure your family’s nutritional needs are met, from infancy to childhood.

Many people hesitate to apply for WIC, thinking, “I may not need this support as much as others, so I shouldn’t apply.”

In reality, WIC is for everyone who qualifies. If you’re eligible, applying is an important step in supporting your family’s health.
