Valley Health Congratulates Dr. John Prentice as Recipient of 2025 Ability Works Award

Valley Health Systems, Inc. is proud to announce that Dr. John Prentice, Psy.D., has been selected as a 2025 recipient of the prestigious Ability Works Award, presented by the West Virginia Department of Rehabilitation Services. This annual award recognizes individuals who have achieved their vocational goals through perseverance and with the support of the West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation Services (DRS). Dr. Prentice is one of just six honorees across the state to receive this distinction.

The award ceremony will be held in October at the Culture Center in Charleston, WV, in celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Dr. Prentice began his career at Valley Health as an intern in 2023. Within a year, his dedication and advocacy efforts in the Huntington area earned him the APA Citizen Psychologist Award, presented by the West Virginia Psychological Association. In 2024, he joined Valley Health’s staff, where he now provides behavioral health services to both children and adults. He continues to demonstrate an exceptional commitment to patient care and community well-being.

Dr. Prentice’s journey with DRS began in high school, when he sought support for accommodations during standardized testing and the college application process. Through DRS, he received access to appropriate testing accommodations, financial assistance for college, and neuroplastic therapy—resources that helped pave the way for his academic and professional success.

“Being recognized with the Ability Works Award is an incredible honor,” said Dr. Prentice. “My journey has been shaped by the support of my colleagues and mentors at Valley Health, and by the opportunities made possible through the West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation Services. I truly would not be where I am today without DRS. I’m grateful for the chance to give back and support others in reaching their own goals.”

Dr. Rebecca Denning, Chief of the Behavioral Health Section at Valley Health, praised the recognition: “Dr. Prentice exemplifies the resilience and dedication that the Ability Works Award celebrates. His compassion, skill, and unwavering commitment have made a lasting impact on both his patients and our team. We are thrilled to see his contributions recognized at the state level.”

Valley Health congratulates Dr. Prentice on this well-deserved honor and looks forward to his continued leadership and contributions to the health of the community.
