Valley Health President & CEO Steve Shattls retires after 47 years in Community Health

[September 27, 2024, Huntington, WV] — Valley Health Systems Inc. wishes former President & CEO Steve Shattls well as he begins his retirement on September 27, 2024.

Shattls joined Valley Health in 1977. Under his leadership, Valley Health grew exponentially from 3 health centers located inside trailers in rural West Virginia to the current network of more than 50 health centers in 15 West Virginia counties and 1 Ohio county. Valley Health now stretches from Coal Grove, Ohio, to the southern counties of the Mountain State, delivering primary care services to more than 125,000 patients each year.

“Valley Health and community health centers grew out of a need in the mid-70s to develop primary care. We are so proud of our growth. We started very small; we got a small federal grant. I remember pulling the first trailer to Fort Gay, West Virginia, so we could provide dental services and bring on the first dentist. Our mission is all about accessing care. We provide care to everybody regardless of their ability to pay. It has been my privilege to serve the community, especially the women and children who never had access to women’s health services and pediatric physician care.” Steve Shattls, former President & CEO of Valley Health Systems, Inc.

From its genesis, Valley Health has grown from two service lines—primary care and dentistry—to more than 25 service lines and specialty programs, including obstetrics and gynecology, pharmacy, gastroenterology, endocrinology, otolaryngology, behavioral health, and many more. Valley Health’s dedicated, compassionate team includes more than 190 providers and 836 staff members. In addition to providing care within health center walls, many providers and staff members extend their work through outreach, as they identify unmet needs and satisfy them by reaching patients in their communities.

“Steve Shattls oversaw the success and growth of Valley Health Systems for over 47 years. Under his guidance and because of his dedication and leadership, Valley Health has expanded its reach and become a trusted healthcare partner, providing high-quality and accessible care to our community.” – Jill Hutchinson, Chair of the Board of Directors, Valley Health Systems, Inc.
