Valley Health Systems is proud to offer two prestigious post-secondary scholarships to support students pursuing careers in healthcare: the Cokey Muth Registered Nurse Scholarship and the Minority Healthcare Scholarship. Both scholarships are designed to help students achieve their educational and professional goals while making a positive impact on their families and communities.
Cokey Muth Registered Nurse Scholarship – $2,000
The Cokey Muth Registered Nurse Scholarship is a one-time award of up to $2,000 for patients interested in pursuing a career as a professional registered nurse.
About Cokey Muth, RN
Cokey Muth served on the Board of Directors at Valley Health Systems and was a dedicated leader in healthcare development and policy. She trained as a registered nurse at Bon Secours Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore, MD, and excelled as a surgical nurse at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Known for her compassion, generosity, and dedication to quality healthcare, Cokey enriched the lives of everyone she encountered and championed health equity in underserved communities.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the need for nursing in rural and community healthcare in underserved areas of West Virginia (personal statement).
- Have received care from a Valley Health provider within the past 24 months.
- Be currently enrolled or accepted into a registered nurse program.
- Describe future career goals and the potential positive impact on their family and community (personal statement).

- Required documents for a complete application:
- Two (2) reference letters (at least one from a healthcare professional; letters must include the relationship to the applicant).
- Confirmation of current school enrollment or home-school status verification from the county school board.
- Post-secondary acceptance letter (if available).
- Grade transcript showing GPA or a letter of advancement from a registered nursing program.

Cokey Muth Registered Nurse Scholarship Application
Minority Healthcare Scholarship – $5,000
The Minority Healthcare Scholarship is a one-time award of up to $5,000 for patients pursuing careers in medicine, health sciences, or health administration who identify as a member of a minority racial or ethnic group.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Have received care from a Valley Health provider within the past 12 months.
- Be enrolled or in the process of enrolling in a post-secondary program offering degrees or certifications in healthcare fields.
- Describe future career goals and the potential positive impact on their family and community.
- Be a member of a minority racial or ethnic group (e.g., Black/African-American, Latinx, Asian-American, Indian-American, Native/Indigenous American).

- Required documents for a complete application:
- One (1) reference letter (from school administration or personal contact; include relationship to applicant).
- Confirmation of current school enrollment or home-school status verification from the county school board.
